The Bachelor’s Degree in Secondary Education is an initial teacher education program designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary for a rewarding career in secondary school teaching. This program allows specialization in one or two curriculum areas, where specialist discipline knowledge and units that develop pedagogical knowledge are gained. The course also includes units that establish an understanding of teaching practice, such as educational psychology, Indigenous education, and teaching students with diverse learning needs. A unique feature of this program is the teaching placements. Four professional placements in schools are completed, totaling 720 hours of supervised teaching practice. These placements are undertaken in full-time blocks, regardless of study mode, and can potentially be carried out in rural, interstate, or overseas locations. The supervised teaching practice includes: • A two-week full-time block and three-week full-time block in the second year of the course • A three-week full-time block in the third year of the course • A block of one school term (typically 10 weeks) in the fourth year of the course The degree offers a high degree of customization. A major can be chosen for specialization and then one of three options can be selected to complete the degree structure. The chosen major prepares students with the content and pedagogical knowledge needed to teach across the chosen curriculum area from years 7 to 12, as well as in the specialist subject area in years 11 and 12. This comprehensive program is designed to provide a strong foundation for future educators, preparing them for the dynamic and rewarding field of secondary education.
